Leon Tovar Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition showcasing early works by pioneering Colombian artists, including Santiago Cárdenas, Álvaro Marín Vieco, Edgar Negret, Omar Rayo, Freda Sargent, and Alberto Arboleda.
The exhibition highlights works from the 1940s to the 1960s, focusing on lesser-known pieces that preceded the iconic styles for which these artists later became famous. These early creations were instrumental in shaping their artistic development, allowing them to refine the visual languages that would later captivate audiences. For example, Rayo's early explorations, Cárdenas' ventures into pop art, and Negret's organic cast sculptures provide a glimpse into the foundations of their most renowned works.
This exhibition also draws attention to artists who, despite working alongside Colombian masters and icons, often remained in the shadows. Creators such as Freda Sargent, Alberto Arboleda, and Álvaro Marín Vieco—who, despite influencing their internationally renowned peers, did not achieve the same level of market success—are finally gaining recognition for their groundbreaking contributions to Colombian art.
