TEFAF NY: New York

Park Avenue Armory, 643 Park Avenue New York, NY, 10065, 10 - 14 May 2024

Leon Tovar Gallery is pleased to present a captivating exploration of the works by Rufino Tamayo, Fernando Botero, Agustín Cárdenas, Agustín Fernández, Emma Reyes, Jaime Miranda-Bambarén, and Alicia Penalba. Each offers a unique perspective, expanding the boundaries of realism to incorporate the dreamlike, mythical, and abstract, crafting transcendent visual narratives.

Through oneiric landscapes, metamorphic forms, and disruptions of conventional logic, these artists invite us to navigate intersections of myth, fantasy, and materiality that define the diverse cultural tapestry of Latin America. Rufino Tamayo's figural approach was more fractured, schematic, and abstract than figurative realism allowed, synthesizing influences from Mexican and international sources including Cubism and Surrealism. Fernando Botero presents an exaggerated, satirical mirror on society and human excesses. Agustín Cárdenas' sculptural surrealism defies perceptions of space and matter through organic, abstract forms. Emma Reyes invites viewers to decipher hidden narratives woven into her intricate patterns of continuous lines and colors.

In providing an international platform for these divergent surrealist trajectories to enter intodialogue, we invite a recalibration of global perspectives. The fecund metamorphoses manifested in these works demand a reexamination of entrenched aesthetic hierarchies and hermeneutic lenses. By experiencing and integrating these pivotal imaginal imprints, we catalyze the perpetual unfolding of new intersubjective, intercultural understandings.
